Arriving in New York City with his brother Glenn and mother, after his military discharge in July 1948, Wood attended the Hogarth School for Cartoonists & Illustrators (now, SVA) and assisted noted artists Will Eisner and George Wunder prior to opening the Harrison-Wood Studio. After a few years of Romance, Crime and horror comics for a string of publishers, Wood came to great acclaim at EC where he excelled at every genre and became the world's top sci-fi comics artist.
